An Inmate is a person incarcerated within a prison or similar correctional facility.

Inmates vary in character, some being loners, others in groups for community and safety, some even in (unofficial) business arrangements with other inmates and even warders. The reporting of other inmates wrongdoings to prison officers is extremly taboo (known as 'grassing') and will make the individual a target for attack should they be discovered. This 'code of silence' is usually either kept because of threat of force, or danger to oneself, or being branded as a traitor or an outcast within the community of other inmates.
